When the Beetle first debuted, the marketing world was in for a shock.
Because, up to this point, the focus had always been on building up your product, aka puffing.
Everything about marketing your product was built around making sure everyone knew how awesome your product was.
And along came the Beetle. Ugly, slow, generic, bare-bones, and overly simple.
Instead of puffing, VW went with calling it out. And they changed the automotive and marketing world’s.
I’m sitting at my local Volkswagen dealership for routine service on my Passat. And while I’m pacing, I’ve found several of these classic ads.
If you are marketing anything (including your home), don’t overlook the value of going against the tide.
